Mpls Photo Coop: Premier Exhibit Opens May 18 in Beautiful New Gallery Space
Check out this exciting new photographic community located
in the Minneapolis Arts District

¬Ý
Located in a newly-renovated warehouse loft space on the edge of the Minneapolis Arts District, the Minneapolis Photographic Studio & Gallery Cooperative (also known as the ’ÄúMpls Photo Coop’Äù) arrives on the Twin Cities art scene May 18. The premier group exhibition by the members from this creative community will be on display in the beautiful 4,000 square foot gallery that forms the heart of this new photographic resource. Marked with an opening reception on Friday, May 18, from 6-9 pm, this event will be free and open to the public.
¬Ý
Providing both studio and gallery space to its group of 15 members, the Mpls Photo Coop is a creative resource unique to the metro area. The newly-formed collaborative was founded by Minneapolis photographer, Orin Rutchick, a current recipient of the prestigious McKnight Photographic Fellowship. ’ÄúThere is little, if any, chance for talented photographers in the Twin Cities to exhibit their work in traditional galleries. I have always felt that photographers require access to both studio and exhibition space to grow artistically,’Äù Rutchick said. ’ÄúCreating a shared studio/gallery environment has been a most gratifying experiment and I am very excited to see this new creative community take root.’Äù
¬Ý
The membership of the Mpls Photo Coop is a diverse group of fine art and commercial professionals linked by a common dedication to photographic excellence. Capitalizing on the Coop’Äôs nurturing and non-competitive environment, members will utilize the resources of this experimental community in a variety of ways. Some have joined for the versatile studio workspace while others are attracted to the exhibition opportunities within the beautifully renovated gallery space. For member photographer Beth Lehman, the synergistic possibilities underlying this vibrant creative community are key. ’ÄúI plan to take advantage of everything the place can offer,’Äù she said. ’ÄúThe expansive gallery, studio workspace, collegial atmosphere ’Äî having it all together in one place is what makes this enterprise such a great platform.’Äù
¬Ý
The first group exhibition by members of the Mpls Photo Coop will run Friday through Sunday, May 18-20, coinciding with Art-a-Whirl, the annual art crawl sponsored by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association. The Coop gallery will be open to the public on Friday, May 18, from 5-10pm; Saturday, May 19, from 12-8pm; and Sunday, May 20, from 12-5pm. Located at 2400 North Second Street, Second Floor, Minneapolis, visitors will find ample free parking immediately adjacent to the entrance to the building. At this time, the building is not handicapped-accessible.
